Senator Sirajul Haq has been re-elected as chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, by the majority of the JI members through secret balloting for another five-year term. The election result was announced by JI deputy chief and chief of the JI election wing, Asadulah Bhutto, at Mansoora, on Wednesday.
While talking to media, on the occasion, Asadullah Bhutto said that the JI was the only religio-political party of the country which had been holding regular elections for its top offices including the central Ameer. He said that there had never been any gap in this regard.
Historically speaking, he said, the founder of the JIP, Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maudoodi was the elected Ameer of the JIP from 1941 up to 1972. Mian Tufail Muhammad was the second elected Ameer of the JIP from 1972 till 1987. Qazi Husain was the next JIP Ameer and was elected to the JIP top slot from 1987 till 2009. He was followed by Syed Munawwar Hasan, who was elected as JIP Ameer for the period from 2009 till 2014. Asadullah Bhutto said that the male and the female members of the JI enjoyed equal voting right. He said that women wing of the JI had its own election wing.
He said that the elections were held in accordance with the Islamic spirit and on true democratic lines. He said that under the JI constitution, no JI member could present himself as a candidate for any office. Similarly, there was no campaign for the candidates.
Asadullab Bhutto said that for the guidance of the JI members, the central Shoora had proposed three names for the office of the JI Ameer. The three names were Senator Sirajul Haq, Liaqat Baloch and Prof Muhammad Ibrahim Khan.
