Member Punjab Assembly (MPA) Syeda Farah Azmi while addressing a ceremony to deliberate on the "Need and importance of performance assessment of the elected representatives" said that Govt. is paying maximum attention to address the grievances of the people and bringing ease in the lives of the people.
She said that PTI govt. will weed out the menace of corruption from the society and will set practices of transparent, efficient and accountable governance in the country. She said that she personally is maintaining closing contact with the people and is trying her level best to get their issues resolved on permanent basis. The ceremony was organised by Baidarie Sialkot as an activity of NED support "Women's Political Empowerment Program in District Sialkot."
Addressing the audience, Tahir Akhtar Malik former MPA and the divisional secretary general of Pakistan People's Party said that gradually the people have learnt to question that where the resources of the states are being consumed. He said that the ability to question and assess the performance of the elected representatives and public office holders can massively contribute to the success of the democracy in the country. Political accountability is inevitable for the success of the democratic system, he added.
Malik said that not only the voters but the political parties should also objectively assess the performance of the elected representatives. Only those persons should be entrusted with the responsibility to represent the people in the policy and decision making forums that have the passion, knowledge, skill and expertise to do that. Ineligible persons elected for the public offices only cause the deterioration of the system and disappointment in the people. Media can build very decisive role for evolving public opinion and building pressure for launching of appropriate candidates by the political parties and election of the most eligible ones by the people, he added.
Professor Arshad Mehmood Mirza said that it is necessary that the electorate must use their right to vote after assessing the suitability of the candidates for the roles and responsibilities the elected representatives have to perform and carefully evaluating the workability of the manifestos presenting by contestant political parties. Moreover the voters should continue vigilantly assessing the performance of the elected representatives against their constitutionally ordained job descriptions. The voters should play a facilitative and supportive role for enabling the legislatures to pay maximum attention towards policy formulation and legislation in the interest of the people. If these vitally required pre-requisites are not met with, then the democratic set up cannot extend its real dividends to the people and the democracy virtually assumes the form of mob-curacy.
Muhammad Iqbal Ghumman - a well-known political activist while addressing the participants said that the irrational priorities of the voters that form basis of the decisions to cast votes during the elections let the ineligible ones get elected. Since the local bodies are not fully functional so the people contact the federal and provincial legislators and increase burden of work for them. Professor Mamoona Sadaf, Ms. Hina Noureen and Ms. G.M. Masoomi and several others took part in the debate on the issue.
