SEJONG: South Koreans earned an average 35.2 million won (US$31,000) in 2017, up 4.7 percent from a year earlier, data from the tax agency showed Thursday.

The National Tax Service released the data based on the tax returns of 18.01 million people last year.

The tax agency said 719,000 people earned more than 100 million won last year, accounting for 4 percent of those who filed tax returns.

In 2016, the number of workers whose annual wages surpassed 100 million won stood at 653,000, making up 3.7 percent of the total.

Meanwhile, annual wages of 8.17 million day laborers came to 7.93 million won on average in 2017, up from 7.61 million won in 2016.
