ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (Retd) Javed Iqbal Thursday said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been inked with China to streamline and structure, and enhance cooperation in field of anti-corruption.

Addressing officers here at NAB Headquarters, he said in context of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), this cooperation will further boost confidence in projects being undertaken.

The chairman said an effective accountability mechanism is quintessential for economic growth, investment and stability of social order.

He said NAB has devised a proactive National Anti-Corruption Strategy to root out corruption from the country with iron hands and added NAB has geared up to nab corrupt, proclaimed offenders and absconders.

NAB officers should redouble their efforts to eradicate corruption by adopting "Accountability for All" policy across the board, he added.

Justice Javed said NAB's main focus was on mega corruption cases, cases of cheating public, housing societies/cooperative societies, fraudulent financial companies, bank frauds, willful bank loan defaults, misuse of authority, money laundering and embezzlement of state funds etc.

Since inception, one of NAB's major achievements has been recovery of around Rs. 297 billion of ill-gotten money which was deposited in national exchequer, he said and added Bureau's operational methodology comprises complaint verification, inquiry and investigation.

The chairman said NAB has established its first state-of-the-art Forensic Science Lab (FSL) in Rawalpindi which has facilities of Digital Forensics, Questioned Documents and Fingerprint Analysis.

NAB has rationalized its workload and timelines have been prescribed for efficient, effective and expeditious disposal of cases putting a maximum limit of 10 months - from

complaint verification-to-inquiry-to-investigation and finally to a reference in the Accountability Court.

He said NAB has also introduced Combine Investigation Team (CIT) system in order to benefit from experience and collective wisdom of senior supervisory officers.

This is not only lending quality toe work but also ensuring that no single individual can influence the official proceedings of NAB.

The intervention by NAB has acted as a catalyst, as transparency is a prerequisite for promoting investment and economic growth.

Since its inception, NAB had adopted the Enforcement based approach in its fight against corruption. Special focus is, therefore, being given to Awareness and Prevention activities besides Enforcement to educate people at large about ill effects of corruption.
