Jeans are hard-wearing and have come a long way from their cowboy origins. Nowadays there is a wide range of different fits and styles, including bootcut jeans, which are currently a "wardrobe essential," according to style advisor Bianca Staeglich.
We've rounded up five of the biggest denim trends below.
- Straight-cut, five-pocket jeans are the classic pair. The most famous example is the Levi's 501. Katrin Friedrich from the Kehrer Fashion School in Stuttgart, Germany lists the distinguishing features: "Side pockets, two back pockets, coin pockets, rivets and patent buttons."
All other jeans stick to this original format, varying only in the type of waist and the length.
- Mom, dad, boyfriend: it might sound like a family get-together, but they are variations on the classic jeans cut. Mom jeans are similar to tapering "carrot" jeans, but with a high waist, and sit loosely on the legs and bottom area.
Dad and boyfriend jeans are straighter, with dad jeans sitting normally on the waist, while boyfriend jeans are lower.
"Boyfriend jeans are good on feminine hips," explains style advisor Bianca Staeglich. The relaxed cut compliments bigger bottoms and doesn't move up as much as other jeans models.
- Bootcut jeans have extra room on the calf and ankle. "Bootcut jeans are a wardrobe essential," says Staeglich. More extreme are flares or bell-bottoms, which are extra wide at the hem.
- Skinny jeans are everywhere right now and you can wear them with almost anything - they are like a second skin. "Skinny jeans in a dark wash are perfect for the office," says Staeglich.
Caroline Klein from the Network of German Fashion and Textile Designers calls them "irreplaceable." High-waist skinny jeans are especially popular right now. "They make the legs appear longer", explains Klein.
- In contrast, loose fitting jeans and culottes are very casual. One is wide, long and low, the other cut straight with a wide hem in 3/4 or 7/8 length.
"Culottes are definitely in trend again," observes Klein, who is also a designer. With an extra wide cut they almost resemble a skirt, appearing casual and elegant at the same time. They are shorter than normal, so Staeglich recommends them to women with slim ankles.
