Experts at a meeting at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Lahore have talked about "strategies to manage mineral imbalances in livestock" for future growth strategy of the livestock sector. Vice-Chancellor Professor Doctor Talat Naseer Pasha chaired the meeting on Tuesday.
Those researchers, apart from those of the university, were also from the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad and the Livestock and Dairy Development Department. The vice-chancellor said, "Livestock in Pakistan is suffering from a deficiency of energy protein, especially minerals."
He informed the meeting about the results of his research project on mineral mapping where 10 canal-irrigated districts of the Punjab were studied. Prof Dr Makhdoom Abdul Jabbar then gave a brief review of the development history of mineral mixture in the public sector. It was unanimously agreed that there was a need to study the remaining districts on the lines of previous studies conducted by the UVAS and National Agriculture Research Centre. There were also suggestions on Cholistan and other fodder deficient areas urea+molasses+mineral blocks to be prepared to overcome the deficiency of nutrients.
