The government has completed $5.5 billion projects during the last five years in energy, infrastructure and social sectors with the assistance of World Bank, China and Asian Development Bank.
Senate Standing Committee on Finance meeting presided over by Saleem Mandviwalla was informed by the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) that $1.068 billion projects were completed in energy sector, $1.068 billion social sector, $1.063 billion in infrastructure and $1.069 billion in agriculture sector as well as for livelihood of displaced people and for earthquake emergency reconstruction. According to a presentation made to the committee, Asian Development Bank has provided $127.40 million under power transmission enhancement investment programme between 2007 to 12, $172.34 million for power distribution enhancement investment programme during 2008-12 and $399.16 million for sustainable energy reform programme during 2014-15. China has provided $369.11 million for Chashma Nuclear Power Project Unit-II during 2005-12.
World Bank has provided $1.683 billion for social sector which include;(i) $484.75 million for Pakistan Poverty Reduction & Economic Support Operation (PRESO) during 2009-10; (ii) $382.19 million for 2nd Poverty Alleviation Fund during 2004-11; (iii) $158.91 million for Social Safety Nets Development Policy Credit during 2009-11;(iv) $353.34 million for Punjab Education Sector Project during 2009-12 and; (v) $304.24 million for Sindh Education Sector Project during 2009-13.
In infrastructure sector, WB provided $431.04 million for Highways Rehabilitation during 2005-12, followed by $327.74 million by China for Karakoram Highway improvement project during 2008-13. ADB has provided $198.35 million for NWFP Road Development Sector & Sub-Regional Connectivity Project during 2005-11 and $106.61 million for Balochistan Road Development Sector during 2004-11.
The government also completed $1.069 billion other projects with the help of WB and ADB which include; (i) $418.87 million funds by WB for Pakistan Earthquake Emergency Reconstruction Credit during 2005-2011; (ii) $416.32 million by ADB for Displaced People Livelihood during 2007-08 and $234.64 million for Agriculture Sector Programme-II during 2002-07.
