A report by the Special Branch has revealed that 130 Karachi policemen are involved in collecting extortion money from drug dens in the city. According to the report carried by a private TV channel, the act of policemen collecting extortion money from drug dens was rampant throughout Karachi. The majority of those collecting extortion were constables.
The report states that Constable Iftikhar collects extortion from Gulshah-e-Maymar and Ikhalq from Gulbabar. Constable Yousaf is responsible for collection from Pak Colony while Saleem collects from Peerabad.
ASI Zahoor is receiving bribes from drug dealers in Nazimabad while Amjad is receiving bribes from dealers in Super Market area.
Constable Waseem Qureshi collected extortion from the Azizabad area, Tariq and Akhtar from PIB and Asghar from the jurisdiction of the Aziz Bhatti police station.
Policemen named in the report collect hundreds of thousands on a weekly basis from extortion which is then passed on to high-ranking officials.
Sindh Home Minister Sohail Siyal took action following the news broadcast and ordered an immediate inquiry into the report. A team has been formed headed by DIG Sultan Khawaja and tasked with submitting its report in five days.
