As the federal and provincial governments are taking necessary pre-monsoon flood protection measures, the Indus River System Authority has stopped filling the Tarbela and Mangla dams to keep sufficient space for management of flood water in the rivers Indus and Jhelum during the rainy season. According to 26th May WAPDA report about rivers flows and reservoirs level, the water regulatory body is releasing 15,000 cusecs more water from the Tarbela dam than inflow of 90,000 cusecs to bring down the water level to manageable level.
The dam has already been filled up to 1495 ft, just 55 ft below its height of 1550 ft. The water managers have already stored 3.616 MAF water in the Tarbela dam. Similarly the country's biggest upgraded Mangla reservoir on the river Jhelum has so far been filled up to 1209 ft level against its maximum height of 1242 ft. As 5 MAF has been stored in the Mangla dam against its maximum capacity of 7.4 MAF water, the water managers are releasing all the run of the river water downstream the Mangla dam.
The report said that 90,000 cusecs water is running in river Indus at Tarbela, 62,700 cusecs in river Kabul at Nowshera, 60,000 cusecs in river Jhelum and 47.500 cusecs in the river Chenab. In view of improved availability of water for Kharif crops 2015, IRSA is releasing more than 270,000 cusecs water in the countrywide irrigation canal network for sowing, growing and maturing the cash crops rice, cotton, sugarcane, vegetables, maize , fodder for livestock and fruit orchards in the four provinces.
The water flow in the river Indus at Jinnah barrage is 146,800 cusecs at Chashma 1,38,200 cusecs at Taunsa barrage 90,400 cusecs , at Panjnad 64,500 cusecs at Guddu barrage 1,16,500 cusecs, Sukkur 80,600 cusecs and at Kotri barrage 25,200 cusecs . Weather forecast for today: Mainly hot and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country. However, rain-thundershower is expected at isolated places in Malakand division and Gilgit-Baltistan.
