Senator Saleem Mandviwalla has been unanimously elected in as the Chairman for the Senate's Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization. This decision was taken at a meeting convened at the Parliament House in order to elect the Chairpersons for the 34 parliamentary committees.
The Senate's Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Statistics, Economic Affairs and Privatization is one of the most crucial parliamentary panels that have a vast role in scrutinizing economic policies and legislative bills before they are due for discussion in the parliament.
Senator Saleem Mandviwalla takes over as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Statistics, Economic Affairs and Privatization from Senator Nasreen Jalil, who has been voted in as the Chairperson for Senate's Standing Committee on Human Rights.
The main focus of Mandviwalla's tenure will be the upcoming Federal Budget 2015-16, the privatization of public entities, reforms in economic policies, and the improvement of the current taxation system. He is also on the 9 member National Finance Commission (NFC) being headed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to constitute the 8th NFC Award - a new procedure on resource distribution between the Centre and the four provinces.
Previously, Senator Mandviwalla has proven his worth as the federal minister for finance, Government of Pakistan in 2013 and as the chairman, Board of Investment in 2008. Taking in view his vast experience in economic policy-making, the members of the Standing Committee had no qualms in unanimously voting him as the new Chairperson. -PR
