A lot is being written and discussed in the media about Asif Zardari's current visit to Lahore. People want to know what is he up to and what is his political game plan. As rightly alluded to by various analysts, Asif Zardari has taken up his Lahore 'yaatra' to revive dying hold of his dynastical private limited, the PPP in Punjab, where it has almost become irrelevant and a non-entity. As correctly pointed out by these media pundits, Asif Zardari wants to reorganise his party, that has lost credibility, public trust and vote bank in Punjab, resurrected and then hand it over to his son Bilawal. A daunting task, indeed!
As rightly pointed out, PPP has won past elections mainly on what is called, a "sympathy vote". Both Asif Zardari and Bilawal, have no such luxury of a captive sympathy vote bank, barring perhaps pockets of constituencies in Sindh. Now look at the possible allies of PPP in Punjab, besides a covert alliance with the already on the run. PML-N, spurred by a ravaging PTI tsunami. These are probably the Chaudhris of Gujrat whose PML-Q is reduced to a mere two-seat National Assembly political party, the JI, that has almost been routed in Punjab and, given the statements and stand of Tahirul Qadri's PAT, against corrupt and tainted politicians, it would simply be suicidal for Dr Qadri to join in any sort of alliance with the PPP. Should such a political alliance be formed, it will be an instant 'nonstarter' and under the current scenario, PPP is as good as dead in Punjab.
