KP Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan has said that operation was last remaining option with the government. However, he said that efforts were being made to avoid civilian losses and make it a targeted to complete it in shortest possible time period and repatriated the displaced persons as soon as possible.
He was talking to a delegation of journalists from North Waziristan, which called on him under the leadership of president, Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) here in Governor's House on Monday. On the request of the journalists for financial assistance in head of security for renting houses, the governor gave them a cheque of Rs 50,000/- to each displaced journalist from North Waziristan Agency.
The governor said that since the beginning of the current century and situation emerged at local and international levels had increased the importance of the region and FATA in particular for media and media organisations. But, despite lacking suitable facilities and incentives our journalists were highlighting the problems of their respective areas with bravery and honesty. He said several journalists had even sacrificed their lives in their line of duty.
The governor said that operation and use of force in FATA had never remained the priority of Mian Nawaz Sharif and his government. Therefore, he said the government convened All Parties Conference (APC) and in consultation with political and military leadership initiated serious and sincere peace negotiations. But, he said that after the Prime Minister's announcement of January 29 in National Assembly for negotiations and negotiating committee, heinous incidents of terrorism were carried out in the country and their responsibilities were accepted under artificial names. The process, he said remained continue and on the abolition of negotiations they once again gave opportunity to resolve the issue through tribal traditional Jirga and for this purpose a grand Jirga of Waziristan comprising of prominent notables and tribal chieftains was invited to Peshawar.
The governor said that after meeting Corps Commander, Peshawar, the Jirga members also met me in Governor' s House and said that the deadline given against foreign terrorists is insufficient. On which they were tasked for talking with their people and in case of progress they would play role in extending the deadline. But, on the very next day of June 08, 2014 Karachi Airport was attacked and the responsibility was claimed by North Waziristan based foreign militants which in fact was a slap on the face of Pakistan and tribal traditions. After that he said the government was left with no other option that military operation.
