Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has allocated over Rs 8.28billion for health sector in its budget for the fiscal 2014-15. According to budget documents, the budgetary allocations made for the health sector would be spent to complete 93 schemes, including 26 new and 67 ongoing schemes.
The amount under the head of grant-in-aid has also been increased from Rs 7142.335million to Rs 7578.549million and the institutions which would benefit from the grant-in-aid include Peshawar''s Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar''s Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar''s Khyber Medical College, Peshawar''s Khyber College of Dentistry, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar; Peshawar''s Postgraduate Medical Institute, Abbottabad''s Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad''s Ayub Medical College, Peshawar''s Institute of Kidney Diseases, Peshawar''s Khyber Girls Medical College and Bashir Bilour Memorial Children Hospital.
Projects which are planned to be completed in the financial year 2014-15 are: Nowshera and Timegara medical colleges, district headquarter hospital in Torghar, malaria and dengue prevention programmes, completion of hospitals buildings in districts headquarter Nowshera, Kohistan, and Hangu, establishment of 500-bed hospital in Saidu, Swat, and setting up of 50-bed Kidney centre in Peshawar, category-D hospital in Pattan Kohistan and Dowaba Hangu.
Besides, an independent monitoring unit would be established to prepare report on shortcomings of facilities at major heath services and tertiary hospitals in the province. The monitoring unit would also keep check on attendance of doctors and attitude of medical staff with patients. A programme under the health initiative of the KPK government would be launched to protect from viral diseases, ensuring cleanliness in all major cities of the province.
Women, who would have complete check-up from specialist physicians, would be given Rs 300 as assistance, while during delivery, if the check-up would be carried out by recognised midwife then, they would get Rs 1000. Moreover, with a view to achieving millennium development goals (MDGs) in the health sector, the provincial government in its budget has earmarked Rs 1.4billion whereby a health protection programme aimed at improving the healthcare facilities for poor and deserving children and mothers in Chitral, Kohat, Malakand and Mardan would be initiated. The budget documents further showed that the KP government in order to bring transparency its health system would make necessary amendments to the Medical and Health Institution Act-2002 and Health Foundation Act-1995.
