Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday said there is no shortage of resources and experts in health sector; they should sit together with the government and submit proposals and recommendations for improving healthcare system. "Healthcare is among the top priorities of the government and Punjab government is providing maximum resources for the provision of best treatment facilities to the masses," Shahbaz said while addressing annual convocation of King Edward Medical University (KEMU) here today.
Shahbaz said doctors are associated with a sacred profession and their oath of service to ailing humanity demands that they should spare no effort in the treatment of patients. He said doctors should work as hard for upholding their oath as they did for obtaining MBBS degree so that medical needs of the masses could be fulfilled. He said doctors should abide by their code of conduct and serve the ailing humanity without any discrimination of caste, colour and creed and rehabilitate rural and basic health centers as well. He said doctors should also serve at rural and basic health centers as well as tehsil and district headquarters hospitals. He said doctors should go to far-flung and backward areas with the same spirit as they show in going abroad for proving their talent. He said it is the only way through which Pakistan can regain its lost status in the comity of nations. He said the common man has as much right over modern treatment facilities as judges, generals, politicians, ministers, police officers and elite.
The Chief Minister congratulated the new graduates and said they are now stepping into practical field and like their parents and teachers the people of the province also have high expectations of them that they will play a vigorous role for the improvement of healthcare system. He said participation in the annual convocation of KEMU is an honour for him as this institution has been producing a number of prominent doctors for decades who are serving ailing humanity in Pakistan as well as abroad in a commendable manner. He said KEMU is also rendering invaluable services for the promotion of medical education and research in this sector.
Shahbaz said Punjab government provided 120 acres of land for setting up new campus of KEMU in Muridke. He announced a grant of two billion rupees for the construction of the campus and said maximum resources will be provided for the uplift of health sector. The Chief Minister said the most modern Tayyip Erdogan Hospital built by Turk government in district Muzaffargarh will be completely outsourced. He said people of South Punjab will not have to go to Lahore or Karachi now for treatment rather people of these cities will come to this hospital for benefiting from latest medical facilities. In order to change the destiny of nation, the golden principle of honesty and hard work will have to be adopted as it is essential to transform Pakistan in accordance with the vision of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal, he said.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor KEMU Dr Faisal Masood in his address of welcome highlighted the academic activities of the institution. He said solid measures are also being taken for improving the standard of education of the university. He said investment in education sector is the vision of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Punjab government has provided a large piece of land in Muridke for setting up new campus of KEMU. The Chief Minister also awarded gold medals to position-holder doctors. Vice Chancellor of KEMU presented a shield to the Chief Minister.
