KARACHI: In view of the recent fire incident at a factory near a residential area in Korangi Karachi, the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has decided to collect the data of illegal industrial and commercial activities in and around residential areas throughout the province to prevent such incidents in future.

In this regard, DG sNaeem Ahmad Mughal has issued written directives to all his district offices asking them to conduct a door-to-door survey of residential areas of their respective jurisdiction and collect data of all such illegal industries which are operating without safety measures and can cause damage to human life, property, and environment in case of fire accidents.

Officials said that district offices have also been asked to check that if industries located in residential areas are operating which authority had given them this approval. Besides, the district offices have also been directed to review the environmental issues of the said industries.

On 27 August, some 17 factory workers brunt alive and a rescue volunteer sustained injuries after a massive fire erupted inside a ‘highly flammable’ chemical factory in Mehran Town, in the jurisdictions of Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) Police Station.
