LAHORE: The positivity rate of coronavirus cases remained 4.19% in Punjab province, as out of 16,203 tests conducted during the last 24 hours, 679 fresh virus cases and 36 deaths were reported taking the provincial tally of cases to 141,393 and fatalities to 4160.

With recovery of 1096 more people, the number of recovered patients has reached to 126,225 in the province.

As per break up of virus cases and deaths due to corona in major cities of the province; Lahore has so far reported 69916 cases and 1640 deaths, Rawalpindi 13371 cases and 752 deaths, Faisalabad 7743 cases and 353 deaths, Multan 8707 cases and 310 deaths and Bahawalpur reported 3701 cases and 124 deaths.

On the other hand, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) has taken another initiative in the fight against coronavirus by launching a “Vitamin D for All” drive. The campaign was aimed at increasing immunity in the general public, especially frontline healthcare workers, against the coronavirus through the use of vitamin D.

The joint venture of UHS, Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine and Scottman Pharma was inaugurated by Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar after consuming a Vitamin D tablet.

UHS vice-chancellor Prof. Javed Akram said that Vitamin D played an important role in building immunity against coronavirus. However, more than 20 per cent people in Pakistan were severely deficient in this important vitamin.

In another development, Institute of Public Health (IPH) has inked MoU with PITB for under which PITB will extend technical assistance and cooperation for training of the staff and digitalization of the record of IPH.

Chairman, Board of Management, Institute of Public Health and former Governor Punjab, Lt. Gen. Khalid Maqbool (retd) said on the occasion that Covid-19 epidemic has changed the lifestyle and the system worldwide and the use of information technology has been increased in every sector including education, healthcare and commerce and online working has become a part of life.

Moreover, the Director General Punjab Emergency Service Dr Rizwan Naseer in a meeting said that the despite of Covid-19 lockdown, holidays in educational institutions there was 29.54% crashes occurred in last year which is 0.67% slight high in the number of RTCs as compared to 28.87 % crashes of 2019.

He said that Rescue Service has rescued 345421 victims while responding to 311444 Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) during 2020 in all districts of Punjab. Rescue has provided post-crash response to over 2.7 million road traffic crashes since its inception. He announced that Rescue will start 2021 with the commitment to establish healthy, safe and resilient communities by recommending evidence based measures to be taken by related organizations to avoid emergencies.
