LAHORE: The Food Department Punjab and the provincial administration have intensified crackdown against wheat and flour hoarders in the province on the direction of Chief Secretary Punjab Jawwad Rafique Malik. According to information by the provincial administration following the raids, 10 mills were sealed in Multan, Attock, and Hafizabad. The Chief Secretary while chairing a meeting here on Tuesday said that the food department and administration jointly carried out raids at different places and seized 16,000 tonnes of hoarded wheat.

He directed the field officers to remain alert round the clock to bring stability in the price of flour and take stern action against the hoarders without any discrimination. He said that any negligence on the part of the administration would not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that some flour mills and importers have protested against these raids saying that the administration even raided those godowns and mills which have stocks of 72 hours in line with the law and stocks were even declared with the food department.

It is said that Director Food Punjab Wajid Ali Shah assured the law abiding wheat importers that the operation was against only violators and hoarders and steps against some law abiding mills were taken by mistake. He assured the importers not to worry about this operation as it is only to streamline the supply of the commodity and flour to masses.
