A Customs Department Gwadar team recovered 5.5 metric tons of hashish near here, officials said on Saturday. On a tip off, the customs squad headed by Deputy Collector Gwadar Jameel Ahmed Baloch signalled a truck to stop but the driver sped it away to avoid arrest.
The customs team chased the vehicle and found it abandoned along roadside near village Hud. Ostensibly, the vehicle was loaded with Chinese garlic, but on detailed search, bags of fine quality hashish wrapped up in plastic sheets were found beneath the garlic bags. The Customs team recovered 5.5 metric tons of hashish and began further probe.
Officials said it was amongst the biggest seizures of narcotics by the Customs Collectorate or any other drug enforcement agency in this area in the last few years, despite the fact that Customs officials in the Makran division are facing shortage of communication equipment and vehicles.
