KARACHI: Around 50% of Karachi Press Club members (KPC) were assessed to be hypertensive, similar percentage inflicted with high blood cholesterol levels, in some cases alarmingly high, while 70% were found overweight during a medical camp organized by Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) to mark World Hypertension Day 2017

Senior cardiologists and other health experts later addressing a session, attended by local journalists, highlighted importance of healthy lifestyle for prevention as well as management of hypertension.

Mentioning that hypertension is a silent killer that silently leads to several ailments as heart attack, stroke, acute renal failure and so-forth, the speakers urged people in general to incorporate a minimum 30 minutes exercise (that may even include brisk walk) as an integral part of their daily lives.

Prof. Sohail Akhtar, Dr. Ahmed Salman Ghauri Prof. Fawad Farooq  and Dr. Atif Hafeez also highlighted relevance of controlled intake of salt, sugar and fat coupled with weight control.

Reminding that theme for World Hypertension Day 2017 is "Know Your Numbers," the doctors said people aged 40 and above must regularly monitor their blood pressure and keep record of it.

This was said to help them to remain fully cognizant of their health status and also to resort to needed interventions, as per doctors advise, without any delay.

During the health screening camp KPC members and their respective families were provided with a chance to get examined their blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels besides and Body Mass Index (BMI).

Majority of KPC members comprising working journalists were also provided medical advice by the doctors and cardiologists attending the medical camp.
