South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was charged of ball tapering by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday. The South African team however, stands firmly behind their captain as Proteas veteran Hashim Amla called the allegations a joke.
The message of solidarity from South Africas senior most batsmen came while he was addressing the Australian media at the MCG on Friday. Amla was accompanied by the entire South African squad and support staff as a show of solidarity".
The reason everybody is here is to stand together and show solidarity to something that we thought was actually a joke, Amla began at the media call, reported Fox Sports.
Its not April, but the allegations against Faf were a really ridiculous thing, and as a team were standing strong. Weve done nothing. For us its basically a joke.
The South African team has been on a blitz lately, they have already won the Test series 2-0 against Australia, and eyes a rare series whitewash. Amla also questioned the timing of the investigation calling it weird, reported News.Com.Au.
To a lot of people it is sounding more like sour sweets, Amla said. Maybe that weve played very good cricket. The timing of it is a bit weird too.
Im just trying to clear (up) what we think is an absolutely wrongful allegation, he added.
