The Lahore High Court (LHC) has reduced the punishment from 14 years imprisonment to five years imprisonment awarded to a former deputy director FIA Riaz Ahmed Sheikh by an accountability court in a reference against him.
The court, however, increased the amount of fine from Rs 10 million to Rs 20 million and upheld the decision of accountability court pertaining to confiscation of his property.
An accountability court convicted the accused for 14 years with a fine of Rs 10 million and confiscation of his property. The accused, who is presently on bail, is facing the charges of corruption and making illegal assets in excess of his income.
PETITION DISPOSED The Lahore High Court (LHC) disposed of a petition filed for the recovery of one Laiq Ahmed when the Home department produced his arrest orders. The law officer informed the court that the detainee was member of Sipah-e-Sehaba Pakistan (SSP) and the government had detained him under Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.
The court, after examining his arrest orders, disposed off the petition and advised the petitioner to approach the concerned authority for redressal of his grievance.
The petitioner Muhammad Aslam had approached the court for the recovery of the detainee. The court issued notices to the respondents and law officer, who produced his detention orders issued by the Home Department.
WESTERN BLOCK DEMOLISHED The western block of the old building of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has been demolished under the directions of the authority of the LHC.
The LHC chief justice had decided to reconstruct different blocks of the LHC and in this regard a contract was also awarded to a firm. Different NGOs and archaeologists had opposed demolishing of the old building. On the intervention of higher authorities, the work on demolishing of the building was stopped. However, the block has been demolished now.
