Sindh government on Friday reviewed the performance of District Co-ordination Officers and Town Police Officers during the first phase of local government elections and identified those who would be either rewarded or transferred as punishment in view of their attitude towards election duty.
Sources said that Sindh Governor, Chief Minister, Adviser on Information and the local bodies election officials had received complaints that high district civil administration and police officers were found indulging in uncalled for activities during polling.
They said that their conduct was against the interest of fair and free elections. They were supposed not to interfere in such matters that had brought bad name to the election machinery and to other honest government functionaries.
The districts where action may be taken included Larkana, Sukkur, Dadu and Nawabshah.
Sources said that complaints against lower staff were also in plenty and many were checked on the spot.
Sources said that the identified officers would be transferred and action would be initiated against them after the third phase of elections.
In the meanwhile, the local government department has instructed all town committees to clean the city, remove banners, hoardings and all election signs.
In some areas of Lyari Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar Town and Orangi Town, where situation was tense on Thursday, condition continued to remain tense and minor clashes between rival groups were reported. An activist of a political party was killed in Usmanabad in a firing incident, and three others were injured.
Police and Rangers were patrolling the city throughout the day to deal with untoward incidents as announcement of final results was expected by the end of the day.
Leaders of Muttaheda Qaumi Movement (MQM) were reported to have visited Jamaat-i-Islami leaders to express their desire to forge unity among the winners and the losers of the elections. They have appealed to the people to maintain peace in the city and forget the past so that normal life could be ensured in the city.
