Reliance Industries Ltd has found 3.76 trillion cubic feet of in-place gas in two coal bed methane (CBM) blocks in central India, India's exploration regulator said, of which experts say maybe half can be recovered.
Director General of Hydrocarbons V. K. Sibal said on Monday that had approved the find by Reliance, India's top private-sector explorer, after a thorough technical evaluation.
"Reliance now plans to drill 20 more wells to establish commercial viability of these two blocks," Sibal said, though a Reliance spokesman declined to comment on the find.
Sibal said Reliance had found the gas at a depth of approximately 1,800 metres in two of its CBM blocks in Sohagpur East and West blocks, on the border of the central states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Reliance's two blocs are part of eight CBM blocks auctioned and awarded by the Indian government in 2002. Eight more CBM blocks were sold last year.
