A conglomerate of Lahorites' organisations, Anti-Kite Flying Democratic Front (AKFDF) on Saturday urged President General Pervez Musharraf to take notice of violation of ban imposed by Chief Secretary Punjab on kite-flying and issue directives for its implementation in letter and spirit.
"Although, President personally likes kite flying and celebrating Basant but due to it scores of people in Lahore have lost their lives. Kite-flying has become a nuisance for Lahorites, scores of people have lost their lives so it should be banned" AKFDF president and renowned Khawaja Izhaar Amratsari said in a statement.
He said Punjab Chief Secretary had already imposed a ban on kite flying in the province but people were still defying it, owing which many motorcyclists had lost their lives in recent months.
According to him, part from metallic thread being used for kite-flying, normal threads were equally dangerous and resulted in slaughtering of scores of people.
"During Basant on February 6, 2005, over 22 persons lost their lives and over 300 sustained injuries due to kite-flying in Lahore only" he said adding that government told Punjab Assembly that so far 265 persons had lost their lives in the province due to this menace.
He urged president to take stock of this menace and clamp a permanent ban with strict implementation on kite flying to avoid more such deaths of innocent people.
