In response to invitation for expression of interest issued by Gwadar Port Implementation Authority (GPIA) to run operations of Gwadar port on Balochistan coast, renowned international port operators showed interest in handling port operations.
Some of best known world''s port operators, who offered services include Dubai Port International, Global Marine Service Company, Pakistan Container International Terminal Ltd in collaboration with Singapore Port Authority and Hutchison Port.
The GPIA will review these proposals, have further dialogues and then make appropriate recommendations to Policy Board headed by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
GPIA Chairman Akbarali Pesnani told newsmen on Monday in Karachi that this type of response from key international port operators shows level of confidence of international investors and keenness to invest in Pakistan.
This will be first time in Pakistan that complete port operations will be handled by international port operators, which will definitely lead to further development of Gwadar port as a regional hub.
"This arrangement will further ensure proper marketing of port as Gwadar port is most needed being a new and green field project," he added.
This arrangement should also ensure good governance and management of the port. International port operators will provide state of the art technology so that well know shipping line call on Gwadar Port and provided efficient service.
If run efficiently with good management and governance, Gwadar is destined to become regional hub providing employment opportunity to people of Gwadar in particular, Balochistan and the country, Pesnani said.
The efficient running of the port will also contribute significantly in economic development of Pakistan.
Gwadar Port management is also in process of hiring consultants, who will prepare a master plan and future expansion plan of port. The operators are expected to work closely with consultants so that future development plans are devised keeping in front regional growth and future needs of area.
Gwadar management is also signing a contract with China Harbour for deepening of channel for which work has already started. The targeted depth of channel is 14.5 meters, highest in any Pakistani port so far.
The deepening will allow mother ships to come to Gwadar port.
The arrival of mother ships will further justify and enhance potential of Gwadar port of becoming a regional hub.
Road network is also been developed which links Gwadar to Quetta, Punjab and beyond to Afghanistan and Central Asia. Once road network and railway lines are completed, Gwadar will also be used as a transit port for Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.
The GPIA Chairman said going forward and in years ahead, this port offers tremendous opportunities and has lot of potential as is evident from interest shown by international port operators.
