National Highway Authority (NHA) chairman Major General Farrukh Javed on Tuesday directed NHA authorities to step up their efforts for timely completion of road links with country's biggest seaport. The government is hoping that the Gwadar port would be completed before June 2006. On the other hand, road network to link the port with major cities of the country is still incomplete.
A three-day NHA general-managers conference commenced here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Farrukh Javed at NHA headquarters to review pace of work on various national highways/motorways projects in detail.
Besides senior officers of the NHA, contractors and consultants also attended the conference.
Farrukh Javed expressed dissatisfaction over slow progress of projects and stressed upon the need of mutual consultation, so that targets could be achieved well in time.
He asked NHA general-managers, contractors and consultants to make mutual links more effective for quality realisation of highway building schemes.
The conference reviewed various aspects for construction of Gwadar-Rato Dero Motorway (M-8).
President Pervez Musharraf has also directed authorities to ensure that road network connects Gwadar to the main road arteries of the country as well as onward linkage to trading centres of Afghanistan, Iran, Central Asian States and China.
The NHA chairman said timely and quality completion of national highways and motorways projects is their top-most responsibility, assuring all resources would be utilised to achieve objectives. He said the present government is attaching great importance toward highways building sector.
Besides examining the progress of M-8 project, the meeting was told that work on Rahim Yar Khan-TMP-Bahawalpur national highway is in progress and that 56 percent work on section I and 61 percent work on section II of TMP-Bahawalpur carriageway has been completed.
It meeting was further informed that 36km long Rajanpur-DG Khan (package A) project will be completed at a cost of nearly Rs 766.66 million while pace of work on package B & C is being accelerated. The 1.10km long Sher Shah bridge project will be completed by August 2007.
It was noticed that 55 percent remaining work on Islamabad-Muree dual carriageway has been completed and remaining work is in progress. The highway will further be extended up to Muzaffarabad.
Khanqah Dogran and Makhdoom inter-changes are also being built on Lahore-Islamabad Motorway. The meeting was told that 84 percent work on new bridge over Sutlej River has also been completed.
The conference was told that designing of Faisalabad-Khanewal Motorway (M-4) has been approved while 7 inter-changes, 2 major bridges and 5 service areas will also be built on 184km long M-4.
