The government has allowed import of raw sugar, which would help stabilise the local sugar prices in the domestic market as the grade permitted is fit for human consumption. According to the sources close to the sugar market, the government last week allowed manufacturers and commercial importers to bring raw sugar in the country, aimed to control prices and curb inflation.
Following that, an explanation was sought, and an official of the ministry of finance has confirmed that the government has allowed raw sugar, having 600 ICUMSA grade, which, tested internationally, was found to be fit for human consumption. The 600 ICUMSA has received certification from health departments internationally and could be imported by importers as well as manufacturers.
Before this measure, the government had allowed import of raw sugar having a grade of 1200 ICUMSA and above, which was processed in the country for refining.
Raees Ashraf Tar Mohammad, chairman, Pakistan Importers Commodity Traders Association, said that the members of the association appreciate the government's decision. The import of raw sugar would help reduce the prices of white refined crystal sugar. "It would benefit the common man and help reduce the inflation level," he said.
The import of raw sugar would shift the pressure from the refined sugar as beverages, confectioneries and bakeries would consume this kind of raw sugar. The companies, which are in the business of juices, beverages and other "sharbats", like Naurus, are expected to consume raw sugar and demand is expected to reach 25 to 30 percent from the present level of 15 percent of 1200 or above ICUMSA, used after a lengthy processing, Raees said.
