Muttahida Qaumi Movement has announced to contest next local bodies' elections all over Sindh, saying the party would win the polls comprehensively. This was stated by the MQM leader Altaf Hussain in his telephonic address from London to the party's women convention at Nishtar Park, here on Saturday.
Altaf Hussain said that the MQM would establish new educational institutions for women across Sindh after winning the local bodies' elections. He said that the party would also try to reduce the prices of commodities. He announced that MQM would establish water desalination plants at the coastal areas of Karachi to overcome water shortage.
Altaf Hussain advocating equal rights for women announced that MQM would take many steps in this regard after coming to power. "Women will be allowed to join the armed forces and would be free to work in any field they choose", he said.
The MQM chief denounced the feudal and industrialists terming them as the curse of the society and pledged that dowry system would be eliminated so that girls are not denied the marriage right because of being poor.
Karo Kari, a form of murder, will not be tolerated, he said and added that the perpetrators of such heinous crime would be charged with PPC 302.
Altaf Hussain asked the Sindh government to review the cases against women and children in the province jails. He asked for provision of justice to them and called for releasing women and children who are in jail because of some minor cases.
He condemned the double standard of some "mullahs" and said that on the one hand they oppose the rule of women and on the other send their women in the assemblies. "These mullahs misguide other's children and send them to Kashmir, Afghanistan and other areas for Jihad but not their own sons."
He alleged that some mullahs who had earlier given fatwas against women rule, became a part of Benazir Bhutto's government.
"MQM is struggling for the rights of 98 percent of the people of Pakistan, who are deprived of basic needs of life. It is lamentable that 2 percent of the privileged people are currently ruling the country."
Altaf Hussain said Muttahida believes that all Pakistani, irrespective of cast or creed, have equal rights and can participate in all the activities of life. "Women are 50 percent of the country's population and we cannot ignore them. A country cannot develop without the active participation of women," he added.
The MQM chief claimed that this women convention was the largest of the kind not in Asia alone but whole of the world. He appreciated the Rabita Committee for holding such a successful convention with so immaculate arrangements.
The MQM Parliamentary leader in National Assembly, Dr Farooq Sattar, Incharge Rabita Committee, Anwar Alam, In-carge Women Wing, Khursheed Afsar, MPAs Bilqees Mukhtar, Fareeda Baloch, Heer Soho and member Rabita Committee, Nasreen Jalil also spoke on the occasion, while various federal and provincial ministers, MNAs, MPAs, Senators and other central leaders of the MQM were also present.
