Afghanistan's ousted Taleban regime said Monday they had released the remaining 23 people from a group they captured last week, after executing eight of the hostages. A district chief and 22 policemen were freed as they had been found not guilty in a Taleban court following mediation by tribal elders, the militia's spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi told AFP by satellite phone from an undisclosed location.
"Malik Noor Ahmad the district chief of Mian Nisheen along with 22 other people were released today at 5:00pm (1230 GMT) after they were found not guilty by a Taleban court," Hakimi said.
The group were taken hostage after militants stormed their district headquarters in Mian Nisheen, near the southern city and former Taleban stronghold of Kandahar, on Wednesday.
No government officials were immediately available to comment on the claim.
Hakimi earlier said that Nanay Agha, the district police chief, was tried and executed along with seven other captives for co-operating with US troops.
