German farmers have offered 133,000 tonnes of wheat for European Union intervention subsidies since May 24, bringing total offers this season to 3,109,000 tonnes, state purchasing agency BLE said on Monday. Market observers had expected large volumes to be offered into intervention as the current intervention purchasing season ends on Tuesday (May 31) and Germany's wheat market remains depressed. German farmers have also offered about 1,548,000 tonnes of barley into intervention, up by about 22,000 tonnes since May 24, plus an unchanged 10,080 tonnes of maize.
With the EU's export subsidy programme failing to generate new overseas sales of German wheat, intervention is currently the main method of selling large volumes.
