Renowned comedian Saeed Khan, popularly known as Rangeela, passed away here on Tuesday after protracted illness. Sixty-four-year-old Rangeela has left behind 11 children, six daughters and five sons, from his three marriages. He was suffering from liver and kidney ailments that had forced him to an early retirement from the show business. The film "Khubsurat Shaitan" (1993) was the last movie Rangeela directed. Similarly, renowned singer Sajjad Ali's directed film "Ek Aur Love Story" (1999) was the last movie in which Rangeela acted.
Rangeela started his film career in 1957. He was a painter of promotional billboards when director Anwar Kamal Pasha, inspired by Rangeela's slapstick gestures and postures, picked him for a comedian role. Rangeela was also a body-builder and a boxer before joining the film industry.
He has been famous for his acting, singing, direction, film writing and production. The multidimensional show biz man dominated the film world for 36 years.
Through all those years, Rangeela entertained the moviegoers with his versatile acting. His roles in seven movies, including "Mazboot" (1993), "Jo Dar Gaya Wo Mar Gaya" (1995), "Sona Chandi", "Piya Milan Ki Aas", "Mein Bhi To Insaan Hoon", "Gharana" and "Humraaz", will undoubtedly keep him alive in the hearts of the people for a long period. Rangeela has performed in more than 400 movies. He also produced films and recorded songs. He was recipient of several awards. In recognition of his distinguished services in the field of art, he was decorated with the Pride of Performance Award.
Rangeela was born in Parachinar (FATA) in 1941. Unlike other actors, he moved to Lahore at a young age and earned his livelihood by painting billboards for the Lahore movie industry. He made his professional debut in 1958 with a Punjabi film called "Jatti", directed by M. J. Rana. As it turned out, it was a credible performance. Thus, Rangeela found his life's calling in the movies. With that commenced an exciting career in the film industry. He picked one success after another, including Punjabi films "Chooriyaan", "Bharia Mela" and "Lado", and Urdu films "Badnaam", "Humrahi" and "Sawaal".
The first movie Rangeela directed was the super hit film "Diya Aur Tufaan" (1969). He was also the producer-cum-singer-cum-writer-cum-actor of the movie. He directed numerous movies under the banner of "Rangeela productions".
Likewise, he emerged as a competent director in movies like "Bay Gunah", "Ik Do Hati Teen Laray" and "Amanat".
