The Senate Standing Committee on Education on Monday unanimously approved the proposal for employing troops of Pakistan Army to aid the civilian machinery in enhancing literacy rate in the country. The Federal Minister for Education Lieutenant General Javed Ashraf (Retd) presented the proposal at the meeting of Senate Standing Committee on Education, with Senator Rozina Alam Khan in the chair. The meeting unanimously decided to move a resolution in the next session of the Senate to engage army in the areas where the literacy rate is awfully low.
The first pilot project would be started for a period of three months, after approval from the parliament in which Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) of Pak Army would establish early and adult literacy centers in the villages aligned to the garrison areas.
Briefing the committee on proposal, the minister said the President had already given his blessing for the idea to engage army to enhance literacy rate.
