Microsoft Corp is seeking a cross-licensing agreement with Hitachi Ltd, Japan's largest electronics conglomerate, following a similar deal with Toshiba Corp, a Japanese newspaper said on Saturday. Microsoft's moves come when it is seeking to spread the adoption of its software beyond Windows into devices for the living room. "We have been approached by Microsoft and are currently at the stage of ascertaining what kind of benefits it will bring," an unnamed Hitachi executive was quoted as saying by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily. No one was immediately available for comment at Hitachi, whose products range from nuclear power systems to plasma TVs and DVD recorders.
Microsoft and Toshiba said on Friday that they had reached a cross-licensing pact that allow them to use each others' patents on computer and digital electronics technologies.
Toshiba is the world's largest manufacturer of microchips used in digital electronics.
