Telenor is offering all the cellular services available in the market through three sales and service centers, along with retail outlets, across the city. 20 base stations have been installed in the city and the number is likely to increase. By launching in seven cities, the Telenor network will cover a population of approximately 34 million people, including the main cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Hyderabad and now Gujranwala.
Further cities will be added according to the continuous roll out plan. The licence conditions demand 70 percent coverage of the population.
On April 14, 2004 Telenor received a GSM licence at the cost of $291 million. By the new licences, Pakistan will have 6 competing mobile operators with the population crossing 150 million and a mobile penetration of 5 percent. Telenor launched its services in March.
Telenor Pakistan is the newcomer among the 12 Telenor mobile companies world-wide with a total subscriber base of 52.7 million world-wide. The company is 100 percent owned by Telenor, which also has operations in Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
