Japan's Hoya Corp said on Wednesday it plans to build a glass disk factory in Vietnam to meet growing demand for glass disks used in computer hard drives and smaller drives like the one inside Apple Computer's iPod. Glass disks are primarily used to store data in PC hard drives, but demand is also being driven by portable music players such as the popular iPod, and a new source of demand is expected to emerge when drives are eventually put into mobile phones.
Hoya, which holds about 75 percent of the global market for glass disks said it planned to bring the plant on-line in December of next year.
