imageHeart strokes are all too common, but there is good news for all that 90 percent of them are preventable.

And how’s that, a recent study reveals that controlling your blood pressure is the answer, as high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke and the impact of hypertension combine with nine other risk factors account for 90 percent of all strokes.

According to Indian Express, the study involved 27000 people from every continent in the world were carried led by Dr Martin O’Donnell and Prof Salim Yusuf of the McMaster University.

“This study is of an adequate size and scope to explore stroke risk factors in all major regions of the world, within key populations and within stroke subtypes. The wider reach confirms the ten modifiable risk factors associated with 90 percent of stroke cases in all regions, young and older and in men and women. The study confirms that hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor in all regions, and the key target in reducing the burden of stroke globally,” said Dr Martin O’Donnell.

The Business Standard reported that the number of strokes could be practically cut to half if hypertension was eliminated, drop by more than a third if people become physically active and reduce by almost one fifth if people adopt better diets.

While smoking caused 12.4 percent strokes, heart diseases was accounted for 9.1pc of strokes. Diabetes resulted in 3.9pc and alcohol consumption in less than 6pc of strokes. Stress and lipids made up some 30pc of strokes.

When combined together, the total for all ten risk factors was 90.7 per cent, which was similar in all regions, age groups and in men and women, the researchers said.
