Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has lashed out at the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) candidate Mumtaz Memon opposing Federal Finance Minister Senator Shaukat Aziz in NA-229 by-elections, as he should refrain from levelling wild allegations against the PML candidate.
A spokesman for the Sindh chief minister said on Saturday that Dr Arbab had expressed his surprise on the demand of the JI candidate that the elections should be held under the supervision of the army.
He said it was an absurd logic, adding on the one hand, the JI wanted President General Pervez Musharraf to doff his uniform and reduce interference in democratic institutions, and on the other, it wanted the army to supervise NA-229 by-elections.
The spokesman said Dr Arbab had termed this change in political attitude as completely hypocritical and absurd, saying the JI on the one hand wanted army to go back its barracks and on the other asking them to come and interfere in by-elections. What the JI wanted was not clear to itself, he added.
He said before asking Shaukat Aziz to show his domicile certificate, Memon should disclose his credentials, including domicile, adding Jamaat candidate Mumtaz Memon was not known in Sukkur to which place he belonged.
The spokesman also said contesting by-polls against Aziz would be an exercise in futility, as the people of Tharparkar had pledged their support to Aziz, and to whom they once make friend, they continue to support him in thick and thin.
He said the MMA and JI had collected millions on the pretext of Zakat and Khairat for the Tharis, but not a single rupee had so far been spent on their welfare, adding they should be held responsible and accountable for each rupee they had collected from the people in the name of Zakat and Khairat.
He said once Aziz is elected, he would work for the development of the area, as Shaukat Aziz had vision, and would work for the betterment of the poor of the country.
He said the Sindh chief minister was confident that Aziz would give a new face to Thar, there would be development in social sector, job creation, and poverty reduction in the area.
He said the JI and the MMA on August 18 would see to who people elect, and to whom they simply reject.
