Five units of the Ghazi Barotha hydel power project will start full-fledged power generation from early next month to meet power demand in the country, besides significant reduction in the tariff, Business Recorder reliably learnt here on Thursday.
Sources told Business Recorder that work on Rs 1,619 million project to install about 450 double and single circuit 220kV towers from Barotha village to Rawat would be completed by June 30.
The total power generation capacity of Ghazi Barotha power project is 1,450MW.
The total length of the power transmission line is approximately 110 kilometre's. About 275 single circuit and 175 double circuit towers are being installed between Barotha and Rawat falling under the jurisdiction of Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco), the sources said.
The project was awarded to Nespak. Senior official of Nespak said that Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) would be able to get electricity at cheaper rates (20 paisa per unit).
After completion of the project, hydel power will be supplied to Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and other areas of Punjab to resolve the load management and low voltage complaints.
At present, two units of the Ghazi Barotha power project are operational, sources said, adding that the installation of transmission towers would ensure utilisation of available water in the canal by producing power through five units.
The monsoon season starting from July will improve water availability in the Ghazi Barotha canal.
Nespak has started emergency work on the double circuit 220kV tower, which is being installed near Rawat Grid Station to avoid low voltage problem from Attock to Jehlum.
The Iesco has announced power shut down schedule starting from June 17 to June 23 for one-hour daily in 400 feeders of 11kV located between Attock and Jehlum to install 220kV tower.
President General Pervez Musharraf had formally inaugurated the Ghazi Barotha project early this year.
