What is the power of free press? Why is real democracy is considered the best form of political system?
The exposure of Abu Ghraib jail tortures by American soldiers who were supposed to protect the rights of prisoners have proved that those who were trained to kill other fellowmen, are without human values and have no consideration for the reputation of their own country.
These soldiers have committed heinous crimes against humanity. Time has exposed that President Bush's real objective of attacking Iraq with American military might was to take revenge from Saddam Hussain who humiliated his father by painting his picture at the entrance of a hotel in Baghdad, which people walked over with their shoes.
Bush and Rumsfeld ignored the international community by by-passing the UN to establish the doctrine of might is right.
History is witness that all those rulers, who have used military might to invade other countries, and killed innocent women, children and civilians men have had to pay a price for their crimes against humanity.
Why do that rulers, civilians or military, in Pakistan never allow full freedom of the press? From fear and lack of moral courage to face the truth about their incompetence and disrespect for the rule of law.
They are only interested enjoying the high quality of living at the people's expense. Due to the rigid control on the access a government documents, the country has rampant corruption, nepotism, and sectarian killings.
The press is considered the fourth pillar of the state and the spokesmen of people and is responsible for exposing the truth to the public. Its prime responsibility is to highlight the wrongdoings of the few individuals.
By restricting by law not to write or speak against the armed forces and judiciary one is causing obstacles in the establishment of good governance. We must learn from history that truth never remains hidden.
