Traffic rules violation and lack of adequate road safety standards claim around 7,000 lives every year in the country.
Annually, nearly 1.7 million people die in road mishaps around the world with 70 percent deaths occurring in the developing countries among which 65 percent are pedestrians and 35 percent of them are children.
It is also recorded that about 85 percent accident occurred due to the negligence of drivers as over-speeding, over-loading, wrong overtaking and driving under the use of alcohol.
This was stated by chairman, Institute of Road Safety Traffic Environment Pakistan (IRSTEP), Kaiser J. Khatana here on Sunday.
He said IRSTEP, in collaboration with Road Safety Health Experts, will hold the investigation study and workshops from the point of view of road safety audit, engineering, safety of vehicle and emergency medical service.
Highlighting the causes of accidents, he said, the majority of traffic law violators are the commercial drivers and they are mostly uneducated, having no tolerance and idea about traffic rules and regulations.
Sometimes, educated persons also don't follow traffic rules and take wrong turns at double roads and drive in wrong lanes, he said.
Kaiser said violations of traffic rules occurred due to lack of awareness about road safety practices especially among the public service drivers, which are the major cause of the fatal road accidents in the country.
It is the high time to launch different programs for road awareness, including check on speed violation particularly in crowded areas, ban on under age driving and use of full high beam lights at night, he said.
He hailed the ongoing development project of national highway and said it would help to minimise the ratio of accidents in the country.
