The retail price of live broiler chicken has climbed to Rs 76 per kilogram due to shortage of poultry products in the city, consumers complained here on Monday.
They said that live broiler chicken was selling at the record high price these days.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) on Monday quoted the maximum price of broiler chicken (live) at Rs 72 per kilogram, while wholesale price at Rs 70 per kilo.
Rejecting the price quoted by Pakistan Poultry Association at Rs 72 per kilo, a consumer said that these were incorrect as the retail shop owners were charging more than the quoted prices in different areas. He said that in posh areas most of the chicken vendors were not displaying the price and charging as per their will.
Secretary PPA Rafiquddin said that the increase in poultry prices was due to shortage as farmers have abandoned chicken farming after the news of bird flu (Avian Influenza) among chickens in January this year.
He said that the increasing trend in poultry product prices would continue for another "one and a half month" as poultry farmers have started rearing chicks.
