A large number of cases that had originated from the National Accountability Bureau or its predecessor, the Ehtesab Commission, have now come up in appeal forms from convicts or the NAB and have been clubbed together for hearing by the Supreme Court from Monday.
The cause list for the next judicial week announced here on Saturday, said the cases will be heard by the First Bench that is presided over by Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui. Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar will sit with him.
The cases include an appeal by the NAB against a lower court's decision on the Ehtesab Reference against Aftab Ahmed Sherpao, the current Federal Minister for Water and Power, an appeal from former Federal Minister Asif Ali Zardari, Ghulam Akbar Lasi, Ramesh M Udaisi, Pir Mazharul Haq, Ghulam Qadir Shah Jamote and Miss Naheed Khan.
Another case appealing against his conviction for 10-year jail is from Iqbal Ahmed Turabi that has been fixed for Tuesday.
There are more than 150 appeals by the Federal Finance Ministry as well as the Industrial Development Bank of Pakistan against the decisions of the provincial high courts in assessment of excise duty.
Most of the cases relate to the textile sector. These have been fixed for Wednesday.
A similar number of appeals are from various other industries, including electronics, spinning, cement and sugar manufactures, who are seeking a review of tax assessment from the nation's highest judicial forum.
THE OTHER BENCHES ARE COMPOSED OF:
SECOND BENCH: Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, Justice Rana Baghwandas and Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan.
THIRD BENCH: Justice Mian Muhammad Ajmal, Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar and Justice Falak Sher. But most of the week this bench will function without Justice Falak Sher who will sit on the 5th Bench.
FOURTH BENCH: Justice Syed Deedar Hussain Shah and Justice Khalil-ur-Rahman Ramday.
FIFTH BENCH: Justice Hamid Ali Mirza and Justice Falak Sher.
