The Indian rupee finished on Monday at a new 46-month closing peak, gaining nearly one percent in the session on strong trade and foreign fund inflows, while the central bank kept its interventions to a minimum, dealers said.
The rupee closed at 44.07/08 per dollar, 0.9 percent firmer than Friday's previous 46-month peak of 44.4700/4800.
It last closed higher at 44.0250/0350 on May 23, 2000.
That took the Indian currency's gains in the past eight sessions to 2.65 percent. Its appreciation against the dollar so far in 2004 is now 3.16 percent.
The rupee had earlier struck a session peak of 44.02.
