Pakistan week started in Colombo on Saturday including a Pakistani food festival and cultural show as its main events.
The event has been organised as part of Pakistan Week starting from March 13 and culminating on March 23.
The food festival will run from March 13 to 22 and cultural show from March 20 at the Colombo Plaza, Srilanka.
The Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan, Tanveer A. Khaskheli giving details about the event in a press conference said that famous Pakistani fashion designer Ms Sonya Battla, five top models, choreographer and make-up artists are coming from Pakistan for the fashion show.
Similarly for the Food Festival, two chefs have especially come from Pakistan. Besides serving the traditional Pakistani dishes, they would also give a live demonstration of their cooking skills and techniques on March 16 at 1200 hrs, he said.
The High Commission is expecting a big turnout of food lovers, fashion enthusiasts, local dignitaries from the corporate sector, government departments, entertainment industry, media and representatives of diplomatic community.
The main sponsors of the Pakistan Week are Unilever Ceylon Ltd, The Colombo Plaza, Packages Lanka, Phoenix Group, Pakistan International Airlines and Export Promotion Bureau of Pakistan.
Highlighting the background of the week, the Acting High Commissioner said that it was a manifestation of strong desire for both Pakistan and Sri Lanka to translate their friendly political relations into social and cultural interaction.
He also mentioned the existing Memorandums of Understandings in Tourism, archaeology and cultural exchange programme between the two countries.
He further said that a process of establishing linkages between the tour operators of Pakistan and Sri Lanka had already been initiated so as to popularise each other as a tourist destination amongst their peoples.
"Pakistan Week is also a step in this direction aimed primarily at creating awareness amongst our Srilankan friends about our social and cultural life," the High Commissioner concluded.
