Dr Mohammed Ali Brohi, son of late intellectual Ali Ahmed Brohi and a nominee of Muttahida Qaumi Movement, has won the bye-election to Senate seat, fallen vacant due to the death of MMA president, Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani.
Dr Brohi, enjoying the support of all the coalition parties of the Sindh government, secured 96 votes.
Voting in the bye-election for Senate seat began at 9 am and ended at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Out of 169 votes, 159 votes were cast.
Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) MPAs did not cast votes and left the field open for Dr Ali Muhammad Brohi, of MQM, and Karim Ahmed Khawaji, of PPP.
A member of the MMA, who is abroad for treatment, was the lone absentee.
The provincial election commissioner, Ali Ahmed Halepoto, supervised the polling.
Treasury members had come at 9:30 along with the chief minister and cast votes one after the other. Chief Minster Ali Mohammed Mahar remained present during polling.
The atmosphere during poling was peaceful and the supporters of the two candidates exchanged jokes and remarks with each other. For the result, as could be predicted, MPAs were seen congratulating Brohi, in anticipation.
Later addressing a press conference Chief Minister Sardar Mahar thanked the supporters of the coalition parties nominee, Brohi, and expressed the hope that the elected member will continue to contribute his share of work towards the benefit of the people of Sindh.
He said that he would like to work with the co-operation and support of all the members of the Sindh Assembly.
Mahar said that atmosphere in the province for growth of commercial activities and investment was improving.
