In line with the directions of President Pervez Musharraf, CDGK will soon convene a high-level meeting of heads of private sector organisations to specify their contribution and responsibility in the development of the city under the Tameer-e-Karachi Programme.
City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan said that worth Rs 29 billion Tameer-e-Karachi Programme had been initiated and the second phase of the programme would soon be announced after consultation with private sector organisations.
He hoped that after implementation on Rs 29 billion special package Karachi would transform into a model city of the country.
He was laying the foundation stone of the re-construction of Korangi-8000 road project under the Tameer-e-Karachi Programme on Monday.
The project envisages construction of 13-KM road from Hino Chowk, Quyoomabad to Dawood Chowrangi at an estimated cost of Rs 1.04 billion, Rs 690 million on road construction and Rs 350 million on related streets.
The road would have two tracks with 10-ft broad footpaths, storm water drains, sewerage lines on both sides, besides a green belt in between the two tracks.
The contract of the project has been awarded to National Highway Authority (NHA) which would carry out the project through Frontier Works Organisation.
Discussing the inadequate provision of infrastructure facilities, the Nazim said that there had been plenty of complaints in the industrial areas of the city but due to paucity of funds he had not been in a position to remove these grievances.
However, considering our genuine concern now the President Musharraf had approved Rs 29 billion special package for the city, with special emphasis on the development of industrial areas, he added.
He said that the government institutions had committed to contribute their share in the development of the city and now it was time for the private sector organisations, specially multinational companies and large business concerns to come forward to discharge their responsibilities by actively participating in the development works.
"Now we are convening a meeting of private organisations and I am sure that the business community will fully co-operate to contribute generously in the development of the city", the Nazim said.
Vice Chairman, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Tariq Puri, who was also present on the occasion said that the government was consistently pursuing the development of industrial areas and in this connection it had already granted Rs 1 billion immediately, while the remaining amount would be released in phases.
He referred to Sialkot's business community who has put a big challenge before the government by allocating a huge amount for the development works and asking the same from the government side.
Giving the precedent, he pointed out that now the local businessmen of Sialkot were contributing so generously that they had embarked upon the construction of an airport there.
Other who also spoke at the occasion were, Naib Nazim, Tariq Hasan, Landhi Town Nazim, Mohammad Shahid, Korangi Town Nazim, Abdul Jameel, Chairman, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, Mian Zahid Hussain and S.M. Muneer.
