imageISLAMABAD: International Museum Day was marked in Pakistan like other parts of the world on Wednesday to acknowledge role of museums in enrichment and promotion of rich cultural heritages.

The day was marked under the theme "Museums and Cultural Landscape" to convey the message that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people.

National History & Literary Heritage Division (NH&LH) arranged a function at Islamabad Museum at Sir Syed Memorial Society to mark International Museum Day.

Secretary National History and Literary (NH&LH) Division, Mohsin S. Haqqani along with Joint Secretary and other officials of the Department of Archeology and Museums (DOAM) attended the event.

A number of students from Global System of Integrated Studies (GSIS) both girls and boys also visited the museum along with their teachers.

Lok Virsa also arranged musical function to highlight the importance of the museum day.

The theme "Museums & Cultural Heritage" makes museums responsible for their landscapes, asking them to contribute knowledge and expertise and take an active role in their management and upkeep.

Every year since 1977, the International Museum Day is organised worldwide around May 18.

The international network of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) proposes an annual theme, which inspires the activities organised by museums around the world-over 35,000 museums in approximately 145 countries have taken part in recent years.

The primary mission of museums is to oversee heritage, whether it be inside or outside their walls.

Their natural vocation is to expand their mission and implement their own activities in the open field of cultural landscape and heritage that surrounds them and for which they can assume varying degrees of responsibility.

By highlighting the link between museums and cultural heritage, the International Museum Day aims to enhance the idea of museums as territorial centres involved in actively protecting the cultural landscape.
