imageISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday said that Islamabad Police should take the lead in the country for police reforms to adopt smart and community policing.

Police has a key role for maintaining the internal security of the country and needs significant reforms in its culture by switching over to modern technology, community and citizens centric systems.

The Minister made these observations while chairing a meeting to review Model Police Station project for Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) PC1 in Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of Ministry of Interior and Police department.

Ahsan Iqbal noted, "model police station" project is aimed at re organising the police department on modern lines in order to improve its service delivery, efficiency and effectiveness.

He said that police reforms are essential to provide security to the citizen and prompt redressel of public complaints.

About implementation of model police station project, the minister suggested that Islamabad Police should adopt a step-by-step approach to reform 22 Police Stations in ICT by taking those police stations first which can be readily developed into model police stations.

He also urged for adopting a holistic and integrated approach focusing on both hardware and software side for successful implementation of this project.

He said that police reforms are part of present government's reform agenda and is fully committed to complete the task for improving the governance.

Police reforms are of utmost importance to redress the public grievances and Islamabad Police should play proactive role in meeting citizens expectations.

He said that Islamabad Police should have a departmental ambition for making this project a success.

Ahsan Iqbal stressed the need for training of police force by infusing the spirit of leadership in SHOs and making constables community friendly personnel.

He also urged for using technology-enabled applications as part of smart policing concept and emphasized the need for standardization technology in federal and provincial police for creating a national police management system.

Safe City Project will provide Islamabad Police a modern technology platform but to take full advantage of project comprehensive training programme for staff must be chalked out.

Ahsan Iqbal assured that federal government would provide all the required resources for model police station project in ICT as part its agenda to bring reforms in police culture.
