imageISLAMABAD: Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday said provincial quota and merit was religiously observed while making appointments in government departments. "Disparity in the quota appointments is removed in next recruitment phase, if found in it," he said during question-hour session of the Senate.

Speaking on behalf of the Finance Minister, he said the National Bank of Pakistan had made 219 appointments in executive and non-executive cadres from July 2013 to October 31, 2015.

To a question, he said 36 commercial banks were operating with a network of 12,529 branches all over the country as of September 30, 2015.

Under the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Branch Licencing Policy, he said, the banks were required to open at least 20 percent of their planned brnaches in rural and under-served areas (RUAs) of the country.

Abasi said out of total 12,529 bank branches operating in the country, as many as 3,178 branches were operating in RUAs, which were over and aove the SBP's existing requirement of 20 percent.

He apprised the house that every year around 750 new bank branches were being opened in the country.

The continuous expanding bank branches network was meeting the needs of businessmen, general public and corporate sector.

To another question, the minister said it was a fact that both 'Badini' and 'Kamar-ud-Din Karez' areas of Balochistan had been notified as customs stations on the Pakistan Afghan border in the years 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The Customs department had constructed office buildings at both the stations, however, due to non-availability of branches of the National Bank of Pakistan coupled with volatile security situation in the area, they were not operationalized yet.
