ISLAMABAD: Advisor to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Wednesday informed the Senate that there were no provincial quotas for appointing ambassadors or high commissioners adding that they were selected on merit and seniority rules.
Replying to various supplementary questions during Question Hour, the Advisor said that provincial quota was observed during initial appointment. He said that ambassadors were selected on seniority and merit base.
He said that under the set criteria, 80 per cent ambassadors were career diplomats and remaining 20 per cent were non-career diplomats.
He said that currently 65 ambassadors belonged to Foreign Service and 19 ambassadors were appointed on contract. The PM has appointed only two ambassadors from discretionary quota, he added.
To another question, the Advisor said as many as 340 persons were appointed in Foreign Ministry during the last five years. He said that out of the total, 56 employees had Balochistan domicile. No person belonging to other provinces were appointed in the ministry against Balochistan quota, he added.
